A BRIEF EXPLANATION

While at first glance, Frost’s poem may seem to be about the fleetingness of youth, to me this poem describes the start of life. Gold does not fade to black but fades to a beautiful green. Dawn does not fall to night but rises to bright day.

The poignancy of Frost’s poem lies in its timing with my imminent graduation from high school. My high school career is drawing to a bittersweet close. I am moving off to college, leaving my parents for the first extended time, and saying goodbye to the friends and teachers who helped me grow. But I am excited at the same time to study new things, make new friends, and stand on my own for the first time. I have my entire future before me, and it is wonderfully undetermined.

I may be losing the color gold, but I am gaining the color green.
